Doctors are Standing Firm

Posted March 6, 2014

Last night I was at a meeting of over 850 doctors at the Pineapple Hotel in Brisbane. I had flown down from Cairns because I wanted to stand with colleagues from across the South East.

We are galvanised as a group. From every corner of the state.

Hundreds of doctors in Ipswich and Nambour stood together yesterday to tell the Minister “We won’t sign!” and there are events at Caboolture and Toowoomba next Wednesday. See below for event details.

We have placed the impending healthcare crisis in the national news.

We have cost the LNP it's first seat in the Redcliffe by-election. FNQ medical staff and I met the Premier and cabinet the very next day in Tully. Despite promising to listen, he still doesn't seem to hear us.

There is some good news. We successfully lobbied Assistant Health Minister Davis, who stood up as a Doctor and with a conscience. We forced the Minister to intervene, and in turn debunked Springborg's myths here

Many others have risen in parliament to join our fight. Jo-Ann Miller, Shadow Minister for Health attended the Pineapple Hotel meeting last night to show her support. Carl Judge from the Palmer United Party also attended, and Alex Douglas has voiced concerns. Peter Wellington, Independent MP for Nicklin, joined doctors at the Nambour rally and also spoke against the contracts.

We can see the government is starting to sweat.

A number of Health and Hospital CEO’s are already making threats to doctors to sign soon or receive a worse offer. The government and their handpicked hospital boards are running scared.

Their defenses will be to intimidate, leak more lies to the press, and continue to put pressure on individuals to sign the contracts early. Don’t fall for these tactics. DO NOT SIGN, we have time. If you are being pressured or are worried call your local delegate or contact our union office.

There is still a long way to go in this campaign. When the government or your CEO takes a swipe at you, or threatens your conditions or your job, remember - this means you are winning!

We will stand strong together, and we will win.
